Wylde on Health – Bryce Wylde

wylde on healthThe value of living healthily is indisputable, but what exactly can we do in our daily lives to be our healthiest self?  In his new book, Bryce Wylde sets out to answer that question. He sorts out the confusing terminology used to describe natural medicine and leads us through a process of discovery about our own real state of health by showing how state-of-the-art self-testing now permits us to properly assess where we’re vulnerable and where we’re not.

Whether you are worried about a vitamin deficiency or wonder if you’re lacking the “feel good” brain hormone serotonin — or even if you just want to ensure you’re not wasting your money on supplements — you’ll learn what simple steps to take to test yourself. Wylde surveys and individually rates an array of present-day natural remedies from a no-nonsense, evidence-based perspective.

He takes us on a guided tour of today’s hottest health trends, highlighting what is good and steering us away from what is dubious (or outright snake oil). Underlying Wylde’s ratings is the very latest research — and he makes it clear that in the face of the astronomical rise in disease and the ubiquity of nutrient-devoid foods, we have no choice but to supplement our diets with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants if we want to live to our fullest potential.

Finally, Wylde on Health explores how we will increasingly use the strategic supplementation he recommends to redress genetic predispositions — the future of preventative health care. – Publishers Website

This book should be in every person’s home – no matter if you are a traditional type person, who, is one of those by the book type people and trust your medical doctor’s advice, and, for those who are looking for something more – to compliment what advice you receive from your doctor – To receive a complete picture so to speak.

I would recommend that you talk with your caregiver with this book.  Some things may not be recommended for whatever reason, because some of these options could have interactions with any sort of traditional medical treatments.  But, as long as you have your caregiver in the know with what you are doing, I don’t see a problem.  I intend to incorporate some of the tips and recommendations, as well as doing some extra things that I am already doing, with my caregiver.

The only thing I didn’t like about the book is all the QR codes.  Not that I don’t think that anyone would not use them, some may not have access to a smart phone with a scanner to be able to use or use the codes to be effective.  I will be posting links below for you to use on your regular computer.  It is impeccably researched, and detailed throughout the book. I like that about these type of books, you can never have too much information which in my opinion is great.

Other than that, it is a fabulous book, filled with some amazing insight and information, once again to talk to your caregiver about.  I cannot stress this enough.  I have been in traditional healthcare, and know of medication reactions and alternative remedies, so please make sure the natural health choices won’t interfere with your current traditional medicine plan.  I know I will be referring to this book for many years to come, unless there is a newer version, then I will refer to that.

#31 – Inside of a Dog – What Dogs See, Smell, and Know – Alexandra Horowitz

The answers will surprise and delight you as Alexandra Horowitz, a cognitive scientist, explains how dogs perceive their daily worlds, each other, and that other quirky animal, the human.

Horowitz introduces the reader to dogs’ perceptual and cognitive abilities and then draws a picture of what it might be like to be a dog. What’s it like to be able to smell not just every bit of open food in the house but also to smell sadness in humans, or even the passage of time? How does a tiny dog manage to play successfully with a Great Dane? What is it like to hear the bodily vibrations of insects or the hum of a fluorescent light? Why must a person on a bicycle be chased? What’s it like to use your mouth as a hand? In short, what is it like for a dog to experience life from two feet off the ground, amidst the smells of the sidewalk, gazing at our ankles or knees?

Inside of a Dog explains these things and much more. The answers can be surprising—once we set aside our natural inclination to anthropomorphize dogs. Inside of a Dog also contains up-to-the-minute research—on dogs’ detection of disease, the secrets of their tails, and their skill at reading our attention—that Horowitz puts into useful context. Although not a formal training guide, Inside of a Dog has practical application for dog lovers interested in understanding why their dogs do what they do. With a light touch and the weight of science behind her, Alexandra Horowitz examines the animal we think we know best but may actually understand the least. This book is as close as you can get to knowing about dogs without being a dog yourself. - Publishers Website

I was really looking forward to this book. However, it left me feeling I wasn’t educated enough to be able to read it much less understand it properly.  There are interesting insights into how a dog evolved from wolves, to their present state.  From day-to-day things dogs do, with introspection as to why they do it and when.  Like I mentioned before, it would be much more understood if the books vernacular was toned down, so that all dog lovers would be able to appreciate the book.

Reference World Atlas – Everything You Need To Know About Our Planet Today 8th edition – DK Publishing

Nick my darling son posed a quite interesting question when he received this book – “Mom, How would you go about reviewing an atlas?”  It is after all one of his favorite books in all of the ones he has received so far to review.

He is one of those kids who likes non-fiction, he especially enjoys history – wars, battles, and all of that stuff.  This book will be worn out for sure.

This atlas is unique.  Not only does it list all of the places in the world, the pictures, diagrams and text and captions are all up to date to even include even new countries or changes in their names.

The key to maps is that they are easy to navigate, to understand, compare geographical locations, and time zones.

In a section entitled “Countries of the World it gives you that little snippet of information about that particular country such as:

  • Languages spoken
  • Population
  • Formation
  • Capital
  • Total Area (bonus question – guess which country is just slightly larger than Canada ?)
  • Religions
  • Ethnic Mix
  • Government
  • Currency
  • Calorie consumption

The index itself could even be a whole other book.  The back inside cover also includes flags of the world which are also updated.

Did you happen to know that the earth is actually shrinking?

  • How the Body Works - After structure, comes function right? Organized by system – skin, hair, nails, everything you need to know about everything using illustrations and clear understandable text.
  • Life Cycle – We go through various stages of growth and development as well as change during our lives.  Using charts from birth right through to death.
  • Diseases and Disorders – We are vulnerable to disease malfunctions and infections.  This part includes over 200 of the most common.

As well, there is an interactive DVD that is included as part of the book.

Like I said I absolutely love this book.  My son has been studying some science this past term, so it is a great resource for him.  He has been referring to it quite a bit.

Eyewitness Oil – DK Publishing

Our world is ruled by oil.  People have used oil for thousands of years, but in the last century we have begun to consume it in vast quantities.  From using just a few thousand barrels in the 90′s to millions now per day, it is now our most important energy source.

It is used as fuel to keep transportation going, and heat needed to generate electricity which we rely on.  It is a raw material which is used by many key substances.  Another thing…it is also running out, and the amount we are using is damaging the environment.

From the beginning to when Oil was discovered in the middle east to the present, this eyewitness book shows us the story behind oil, how it was used in the past to how it is used today, how it is one of the most utilized substances in our everyday lives – think about it, how many things we use on a daily basis that uses some sort of oil product.  There are some that you may not even know that are oil based, and it would surprise you.

Nick liked this book.  He liked the way it shows you how many things are used from oil, and how much is being abused in recent years.  Did you know he thought this was interesting that oil can be made into the print in a book, lip stick, and eye liner.  He enjoyed the full colour pictures and diagrams, as well as which countries are rich because of oil being discovered.  He really enjoyed the alternative sources of energy such as nuclear power, solar power, and of course wind power.

This is one of the updated editions where there is also a clip art cd as well as a full size colour poster that accompanies the book.
