Eat to heal with over 70 recipes for herbal teas, tinctures, smoothies, salads, and soups. – Publishers Website and Back Cover

I looked at this for the better part of the weekend and I absolutely fell in love with the book.  Nowadays, more and more people are going back in time to what they used to do in the old days – things that we take for granted today, how we get them, etc.  This book changes that – by going back to what used to be, we are going back to nature – using what is natural instead of just popping a pill that the doctor gave us.  As I type this, I too want to go back in time and use some of these herbs to try to see if it does really work.

I have to really point this out – PLEASE USE CAUTION !

Some of these herbs can make you quite ill, so please only see your doctor if you are already on medication, pregnant, or a qualified herbalist to make sure that you are doing it correctly.  Some of these herbs can make you really ill if taken improperly.

You probably use herbs on your day-to-day life – herbal teas, shampoos, creams, etc., have started making their way back into being “fashionable” once again.  But, really I think it shouldn’t have gone out of fashion.  We pay for expensive items already.  This is a great way of going natural and saving money.

I think that these books are also a great companion to this one – The Cook’s Herb Garden and Grow Herbs

#30 – The New Encyclopedia of the Dog – The Definitive Visual Guide – Dr. Bruce Fogle

With detailed descriptions of more than 420 breeds and varieties of dogs from around the world, an entertaining look at canines throughout history, and invaluable practical advice,  The New Encyclopedia of the Dog is the most comprehensive exploration of the canine world ever published.

Visual Breed Guide:  Specially commissioned, full-color photographs bring to life the delightful variety of the canine community.

In these pages, you will find not only familiar breeds such as the Labrador Retriever and the Yorkshire Terrier, but also rarities such as the Kyi Leo and the Prazsky Krysavik (the world’s smallest dog), as well as experimental crossbreeds like the Labradoodle and Cockerpoo.

Each portrait is accompanied by an authoritative biography of the breed, including its place of origin, historical development, main physical features, and temperament.

Complete History:  From how dogs evolved from wolves, through the story of their domestication by early humans, to their roles today as comforting friends, workers, and companions in sport, Bruce Fogle illuminates why dogs have achieved a place of honor in the human community.

He traces the special position of canines in human history, as well as presenting essential practical information on choosing and caring for a dog. His thorough discussions of canine anatomy (illustrated with diagrams and photographs), behavior, and psychology offer insights into the way dogs learn, and how they see the world around them. - Publishers Website

I believe this book will be one of the most used books in our library at home.  From how dogs came into domestication to the present, this is one amazing and huge book filled with full color photographs, illustrations, and information you will ever need if you are a dog lover, or if you are new to dogs.  If you are new to dogs, this book will be invaluable to helping you pick the breed that you would like, right down to temperament, coloring, size from the largest to the smallest.  My son absolutely loves this book.  He can be sitting one minute doing one thing, all of a sudden picking up this hardcover and looking at it from cover to cover.  This is similar to the Encyclopedia of the Cat, which we had reviewed a few months ago by the same author.  Simply stunning!  Take a look inside with the slide show below if you don’t believe me.

Reference World Atlas – Everything You Need To Know About Our Planet Today 8th edition – DK Publishing

Nick my darling son posed a quite interesting question when he received this book – “Mom, How would you go about reviewing an atlas?”  It is after all one of his favorite books in all of the ones he has received so far to review.

He is one of those kids who likes non-fiction, he especially enjoys history – wars, battles, and all of that stuff.  This book will be worn out for sure.

This atlas is unique.  Not only does it list all of the places in the world, the pictures, diagrams and text and captions are all up to date to even include even new countries or changes in their names.

The key to maps is that they are easy to navigate, to understand, compare geographical locations, and time zones.

In a section entitled “Countries of the World it gives you that little snippet of information about that particular country such as:

  • Languages spoken
  • Population
  • Formation
  • Capital
  • Total Area (bonus question – guess which country is just slightly larger than Canada ?)
  • Religions
  • Ethnic Mix
  • Government
  • Currency
  • Calorie consumption

The index itself could even be a whole other book.  The back inside cover also includes flags of the world which are also updated.

Did you happen to know that the earth is actually shrinking?

HUGE Post – Collection of Brady Games Game Guides

As you can see my darling son has a serious game obsession !

I am doing all of these books in one post, because a lot of the same strategies are in all of the games you see in the stores and online.

Have you ever wanted to get ahead in one of those games you are playing?  Is there something that you are stuck on and need a hint or trick to get you through to the next level?

Brady Games Guides has you covered.  With the full colour illustrations and photographs, the graphs, as well as possible tricks, cheats, and cool things that you may not have gotten have you not gotten one of these game guides will make it all worth while.

Some of the books do include spoilers, but be assured, your game playing will never be the same.  From start to finish, the books contain everything  you need to know about the game – controls, features, levels, campaigns, weapons, and even multiplayer modes that will have you glued to the game more than before…Is that even possible?

The full colour photographs taken directly from the games themselves are just awesome in my son’s humble opinion.  Right now he is glued to the UFC Undisputed 2010 looking inside the guide for tips and tricks that are new from the previous version of UFC 2009.

The guides themselves are most of the time for all games for instance Modern Warfare 2 covers Xbox 360, Playstation 3, and the computer game, the reflex edition of Modern Warfare on ly covers the Wii edition, or just separate game consoles, so be careful when selecting a guide.

Brady Games also has a website where you can download certain e-guides, secret codes, and added extras for the serious gamer in your family.

Brady Games also has Facebook Page as well as a page on YouTube

These guides would even be a great addition to the games that are being given for Christmas too! They are also reasonably priced.

The Complete Human Body – The Definitive Visual Guide – DK Publishing

  • Anatomy Atlas – Starting from the head working down to the toes on your feet, every part is examined in intimate detail using state of the art 3-d illustrations and scans.
  • How the Body Works - After structure, comes function right? Organized by system – skin, hair, nails, everything you need to know about everything using illustrations and clear understandable text.

The Best Art You’ve Never Seen – Julian Spalding

Across the globe, there are hundreds of beautiful and unusual works of art that are largely unseen or fail to receive the critical acclaim they deserve.

Why, You ask?

From Peru to Papua New Guinea, this book uncovers neglected wonders in obscure corners of the world, or shut away in either private collections, museums store rooms, or just plain inaccessible because of where they are located – rock falls, shifts in trade routes, or just to avoid destruction of for use in the afterlife.

Many are hidden by changes in taste, marginalized because they don’t fit into the already established norms of art, demands of conservation.  Many are still waiting to be re-discovered for the first time.

The author brings you into this part of the world throughout the amazing photography, alone with a detailed back stories about each work of art, the controversies behind the pieces that are unfamiliar to most to gain a fresh perspective.

I think this would be a great idea to plan a trip to see some of the more accessible pieces as part of a holiday or even as a holiday to see the pieces among the cities and places that take advantage of the art as they walk by on a street, or just fail to see the beauty.

A Greener Christmas – Sheherazade Goldsmith

Decorate the Christmas Tree with homemade gingerbread men, craft a simple wreath from fallen leaves, make gift labels and cards from vintage fabrics, or design a stocking, bake festive breads and use to fill gift baskets with and all with locally outsourced organic food.

Escape the modern-day commercialized Christmas and enjoy a simpler, more home spun way of celebrating.

I received this book and was looking forward to it to get some mew ideas on what I could do.

Right now, I am a bit divided on the book.  The whole idea of getting away from the more commercialized parts of Christmas appealed to me.  A lot of the activities you may have to plan ahead of time to be able to complete for example the leaf wreath, some of the activities are more for the younger children.

There are some good ideas as well as recipes in the back of the book.  One thing I didn’t like about the book was suggesting that you re using old bottles and containers that could be possibly hard to find than just buying them.

The recipes are great, from the Vanilla cookies to the Honey Roast Ham to jams and jellies you can use in gift baskets are really great ideas – planning ahead is a big theme in this book like I mentioned before.

I may use one or two ideas out of the whole book this year to see how they work out.

There are also a huge list of websites not only from the US but Canada as well to help you reuse and recycle, or just for more ideas.

Did you know that when women have equal access to education, health care, employment, and power -  societies become richer, healthier and more peaceful?

Did you also know that 1 billion children are in elementary school and high school, but there are 72 million children that cannot access education because their parents are too poor to afford it?

Ideas That Changed The World – DK Publishing

When walking through the mall, window shopping as we say, have you ever wondered who invented some of the things that we either use in our everyday lives, or have used those items and how they have evolved over the years?  We sometimes take these things for granted.  But, Ideas that changed the world may change that.

We use things every single day from cell phones to video games to space helmets..well, maybe not really space helmets, but, you know what I am getting at, everything came from a simple idea that now makes our life just a little bit easier.  The people behind them you may or may not be familiar with, but, they have changed out lives forever, possibly for the better.

Topics such as -

  • who created the first video game
  • how a computer geek put the world online, so that you are able to view this review
  • antibiotics that help people live longer and healthier lives, which also help transform the way in which new drugs are developed
  • did you know that the first public TV broadcast could be watched and listened to, but just not at the same time?
